Popular Fish Species Lake Moomaw, VA
Smallmouth Bass
Current Report: Good To Very Good
Alewives and crawfish are favorites food sources of smallmouth bass here. Find schools of alewives typically in 15 to 25 of water, or search out rocky and gravel shorelines where crawfish thrive. Anglers report best results with slow retrieves. Fish habitat is planted in various spots around the lake and are generally worth checking out. Mid-range crankbaits, jerkbaits, Ned rigs and tube baits are popular smallie lures here. Smallmouth fishing is often good on cold, windy, cloudy and rainy days. After the spawn, look for these smallmouth to get aggressive and feed heavily. Early and late in the day topwater can be effective throughout the warmer months.
Black Crappie
Current Report: Good To Very Good
Crappie fishing has been on the rise here for both quantity and quality. Spring is the premiere time to be on the water as crappie move into shallow coves to spawn. Expect to find crappie in 5 to 10 feet of water. Planted fish habitat, wood and vegetation are all good places to cast small crappie jigs or live minnows. Once the spawn is over, and the hot Summer sun warms the shallows, crappie retreat to depths of 15 to 25 feet or deeper. Light tackle with 4 lb to 8 lb line is ideal. Anglers are reporting good success using fish finders and forward facing sonar to locate schools of crappie.
Brown Trout
Current Report: Fair To Good
Feeding on alewives and small fish, brown trout are excelling in Lake Moomaw. Weekend anglers are catching brown trout on spinners, small jerkbaits, nightcrawlers and a variety of other small offerings. Brown trout can be very aggressive, and put up a good battle. In addition to browns, rainbow and brook trout are also stocked periodically to maintain a favorable trout fishery.
