Pyramid Lake is a stunning desert lake located in the northern part of Nevada, within the Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation. It is renowned for its unique and ancient Lahontan cutthroat trout, making it a popular destination for anglers seeking a unique and challenging fishing experience.
The most coveted fish species at Pyramid Lake is the Lahontan cutthroat trout, which is the largest species of cutthroat trout in the world. These trout can grow to impressive sizes, with some individuals reaching over 30 pounds. Anglers from far and wide visit Pyramid Lake to try their luck at catching these iconic and majestic fish.
Fishing at Pyramid Lake typically involves shoreline fishing, where anglers stand on the rocky beaches or wade into the lake's clear waters. The best fishing usually occurs during the cooler months, from October to May, when the trout are more active and closer to the shoreline.
Since Pyramid Lake is located on tribal land, a tribal fishing permit is required for all anglers, and certain areas may have restricted access. It is essential to respect tribal regulations and practice catch-and-release to ensure the conservation of the precious Lahontan cutthroat trout population.
With its stunning scenery and the chance to catch one of the largest cutthroat trout in the world, Pyramid Lake remains a must-visit destination for anglers and outdoor enthusiasts seeking a memorable fishing experience in the heart of the Nevada desert.
Bait is not allowed as this lake is limited to artificial lures only. Most fishing from the bank is done along the southwestern shoreline. In addition to the unique approach of ladder fishing, anglers troll or cast from boats to reach trout, which move about aggressively in search of food. Perch also reside here and can be taken on small artificial lures and jigs. Popcorn Boat Ramp and the Pelican Point Boat Ramp are the two primary spots for launching larger pleasure and fishing boats. Canoes, kayaks and car-top boats can be launched most anywhere there is public access. Pyramid Lake Marina and RV Park has camping, dining and a general store.
