Popular Fish Species Lake Lahontan, NV
Fishing Report: Walleye
Current Fishing Report: Fair To Good
A lot of walleye are being caught using new technologies, cutting down on the time it takes to locate them. Forward-facing, and side scanning, sonar is assisting anglers, fishing from a boat, to locate fish. Fishing is better as anglers can focus on areas with good numbers of walleye. This is true for either trolling or casting. Anglers fishing from the bank still have to search the old fashion way, via test casting, until a school is located.
There are plenty of quality walleye here, with anglers occasionally reporting a catch over 10 pounds. Currently, and again in Fall, are generally the best months to fish shallow. In Summer, early mornings, and dusk are reported to be the best times to catch walleye shallow. Daytime in Summer and throughout Winter, they tend to school up in deeper water where they slow-cruise around flats and structure close to deep water, where they primarily feed close to the bottom. Blade baits, jigs, swimbaits and spoons are catching them. Worm harness spinners, spoons and deep-diving crankbaits, and are also catching walleye while trolling.
Fishing Report: Hybrid Striped Bass
Current Fishing Report: Good
Hybrid striped bass here tend to run in sizeable schools. The use of new fish-locating electronics is helping anglers catch more hybrid stripers. Forward-facing, and side scanning, sonar is currently one of the the best ways to locate schools of both wipers and baitfish. It is particularly helpful in deep water. Once located, hybrid striped bass are being caught by trolling, casting or jigging, depending on depth.
The white bass will begin their spawning runs soon, and are starting to be caught in the Carson River section. As the schools migrate up river, and again as they move back to the main lake,, the narrows at Fishermans Point is a good area. Swimbaits, jerkbaits, crankbaits, spoons, live bait and cut bait are all effective here for hybrid stripers. The lake record is over 15 pounds, and there are plenty of wipers in the 10 lb to 15 lb range being caught occasionally. Their primary diet is the schools of baitfish, and they follow these schools to stay close to food supply. Successful anglers use electronics and fish finders to locate both bait and wipers, throughout the year on the main lake.
Fishing Report: White Bass
Current Fishing Report: Fair
The use of new technology is helping anglers catch more white bass. Forward-facing, and side scanning, sonar is currently one of the the best way to locate schools of fish, especially when they hang out in deep water. Once located using these sophisticated fish finders, white bass are being caught by trolling, casting or jigging,
White bass over 3 pounds are not uncommon lately, with some pushing the 4-pound mark. However they typically run about 1 lb to 2 1/2 lbs. Cool water temperatures, currently in the low 40's, has them a bit sluggish. They tend to start their spawn run once the water temperature gets into the mid 50's, moving upstream into the river area where they congregate for several weeks. This is a prime time to fill the livewells with some fat white bass. Swimbaits, curly-tail jigs, underspins, small crankbaits, small jerkbaits, and most any lure that looks like baitfish are catching plenty of fish. During Summer, Fall and Winter the white bass migrate back to the main lake areas following baitfish.
