Fishing Report: Channel Catfish
Current Fishing Report: Good
Although forward-facing sonar and other high-tech fish finders were designed for bass fishing, many catfish anglers, who fish from a boat, are now using them to locate channel catfish. With this they are now catching more catfish, by focusing on productive water. The catch rate has increased considerably, and anglers are picking their targets to catch the bigger cats. New baits, line and rigging methods have also improved success for bank fishing enthusiasts. Savvy anglers, who study catfish life cycle and patterns, are still managing to catch nice fish, with or without these new tools.
Fishing for channel catfish is popular here, and they are running good size this year. The lake record is nearly 20 pounds. Locals are productive around any kind of structure, especially on flats with stumps, near deep water. Fishing late in the day until midnight often produces the best fishing activity as this is the ideal feeding time for channel cats. Spring, and again in Fall, are typically the best seasons to catch both quantity and quality. Submerged road beds, creek channels and rocky points are all good places as well. Use a slip sinker or Carolina rig setup.

Bass fishing is currently experiencing major changes in the way anglers are approaching the sport. The expanded use of high-tech fish finders is giving anglers, who fish from a boat, a distinct advantage. The fishing hasn't really changed, but the catch rate has increased considerably. The advent of new lures and equipment has improved success for anglers fishing from the bank as well. Savvy anglers, who study bass patterns, continue to catch nice fish, with or without the new gadgets.
This loaded with timber and stumps. According to reports by locals, you'd think there was a bass hanging around each one. And, not just bass, but big ones! The lake record is over 13 1/2 pounds. Bass over 10 pounds are not uncommon, with 4 to 9 pounders caught frequently. Bass are currently being caught on jigs, spinnerbaits and vibrating jigs, along with a wide variety of other lures. Whenever the bass get finicky, a stick worm, rigged wacky style, is a go-to bait to fool big bass here.

The use of new technology is helping anglers catch more white bass. Forward-facing, and side scanning, sonar is currently one of the the best way to locate schools of fish, especially when they hang out in deep water. Once located using these sophisticated fish finders, white bass are being caught by trolling, casting or jigging,
White bass run in large schools and feed on baitfish. They are starting their spawn run now that the water temperature is rising to the mid 50's. White bass move upstream into the river area, and running creeks, and congregate for several weeks. The lake level dictates where you will find the, but you can bet they will be around schools of bait. This is a prime time to fill the livewells with some fat white bass. Swimbaits, curly-tail jigs, spoons, small crankbaits, small jerkbaits, and most any lure that looks like baitfish are working.
