Anacoco Lake Popular Fish - Largemouth Bass

Largemouth Bass Fishing

Anacoco Lake is a popular bass tournament for local anglers. Weekend and tournament anglers find the fishing to be slow at time, yet pretty good at other times. Fishing for bass can be quite rewarding, with an occasional bass over 4 pounds being caught. Bass often move shallow and become aggressive when they are in a feeding mood. Use shallow crankbaits around rip rap. Around grass, use worms, jigs, topwater and spinnerbaits. In deeper water, drop shot rigs, big worms, jigs and spoons are good options. In winter, spend your time fishing deeper structure where the bass spend much of their time. A history of careful fisheries management by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has helped to maintain a good bass fishery for anglers.

This year blue catfish are running in the big to monster size in Anacoco Lake. Most of the local guides offer catfish trips, and big blues are the favorite target. The state record is over 100 pounds. Fishing for blue catfish is most often productive during spring through summer around any kind of structure. Blue catfish are primarily found in large rivers, along the main channels, in and around tributaries flowing into impoundments of major river systems. They tend to move upstream in the summer in search of cooler temperatures, and downstream in the winter in order to find warmer water.The river end of the lake is often the area where the bigger catfish are caught. Road beds, creek channels and rocky points are all good places to begin. Use a slip sinker or Carolina rig with cut bait or other popular catfish baits. Channel and flathead catfish are also available here for anglers to pursue.

Plenty of healthy white crappie reside in Anacoco Lake, as they are making a nice comeback this year. The fish population is healthy and crappie fishing is excellent. The best time to catch crappie tends to be at dawn and dusk. Crappie always like cover and structure, so locate shallow brush and vegetation in Spring and Fall focusing on the 8 to 12 foot range. As the crappie move deep in summer and winter, follow points out to as deep as 30 to 35 feet, as well as ledges near channels at these depths. Live bait and small jigs are the most common method for crappie here.

Located in western Louisiana, 5 miles west of Leesville, Anacoco Lake is a 2,400-acre lake that receives relatively little fishing pressure. Flooded trees and brush are scattered along much of the twenty-one miles of shoreline, making this a great home for crappie, bass and sunfish.

One of the most sought-after species in Anacoco Lake is the largemouth bass. This lake provides excellent bass fishing, with the chance to catch a trophy. In addition to largemouth bass, it is also home to channel catfish, flathead catfish, and blue catfish. For those interested in panfish fishing, Anacoco Lake has ample populations of black crappie, white crappie, bluegill, and redear sunfish.

Areas for fishing from the bank can be found at boat landings, campgrounds and other areas with public access, but the ideal way to fish this lake is by boat. Boat launch ramps are open to the public at Methodist Landing Recreational Park and the Anacoco Lake Spillway Store and RV Park.
