Popular Fish Species Big Stone Lake, MN
Walleye

Current Report: Good
Outlook: Good To Very Good
Locals are reporting a lot of big walleye are being caught in Big Stone Lake, especially in winter. Walleye are light sensitive, so in Spring and early Summer they prefer murkier water when feeding shallow, in rocky and weedy areas. During summer and winter, plus during mid say in Spring, walleye like to slow cruise around flats and boulders nearby deeper water. They primarily feed close to the bottom, so bottom bouncers work well trolling about 1 mph. A blade bait or a swimbait is also a good way to locate the fish. Troll or fan cast to cover lots of water. Locals report spoons, jigs tipped with minnows, and worm harness spinners are also catching walleye while trolling.
Yellow Perch

Current Report: Good To Very Good
Outlook: Very Good To Excellent
Perch jigs tipped with chunks of nightcrawlers, wax worms, minnows and prepared baits are catching lots of nice yellow perch in Big Stone Lake this year. Through the ice, or fishing after the thaw, these small jigs are a great, basic perch bait. Fishing around the boulders, and curly-leaf pondweed while ice fishing, anglers are reporting nice catches of fat perch. These tasty fish provide a steady food source for larger, predator fish, plus they make a tasty table fare for anglers. Yellow perch are a very popular species to catch in winter when ice fishing here.
Bluegill

Current Report: Fair To Good
Outlook: Good To Very Good
Although bluegill are a primary food source for predator fish in Big Stone Lake, the ones that get too large for predators, tend to grow extra large. They are fun to fish for, and also make tasty table fare. Local anglers report good size bluegill being caught with some frequency while ice fishing around beds of curly-leaf pondweed. Small pieces of nightcrawlers make an ideal bait, on a small hook or jighead tied to light line.
