Smallmouth Bass Fishing
Smallmouth bass are a favorite of many locals at Mount Storm Lake, as they are tough fighters and fun to catch. Fishing for smallmouth bass is good anytime they are shallow - in spring, during high water, mornings in summer and during warmer fall afternoons. Use shallow crankbaits around rip rap, and around grass use worms, jigs, topwater and spinnerbaits. In winter, spend your time on deeper structure with small worms, jigs and spoons. Largemouth bass also reside here in good numbers.
Channel Catfish Fishing
A healthy population of channel catfish populate the waters of Mount Storm Lake, and can be found all around the lake. In Spring channel cats migrate toward incoming water, so stay up river away from the main lake. Night fishing for channel catfish often delivers better results than fishing during the day. In early summer look for rocky banks, the bigger the rocks the better. In summer and winter deeper structure is where to look. The river end of the lake is often the area where the bigger catfish are caught. Fishing for channel catfish is often productive around any kind of structure in the area. Road beds, creek channels and rocky points are all good places to begin. Use a slip sinker or Carolina rig with popular catfish baits.
Bluegill Fishing
Much like many lakes across the country, fishing for bluegill is a time-honored tradition at Mount Storm Lake. Young and old, beginners and seasoned anglers alike, all enjoy catching a bunch of fat bluegill. This year, much like recent years, the bluegill population is healthy and always looking for something to eat. Bluegill fishing is as basic as fishing gets. Any pole, reasonably small line and small hooks baited with anything edible, creates the ideal setup. Add a bobber and you can set the depth you prefer the bait to position. Bluegill hang around brush, rocks, vegetation or any cover available.

Fish species to fish for...
Guide to fishing for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, channel catfish, walleye, bluegill, stripers and hybrid striped bass at Mount Storm Lake in West Virginia.
Stripers, smallmouth and largemouth bass and catfish are the main attraction at Mount Storm Lake, a 1,200-acre lake in the northeast part of the state, at Bismarck. The lake water is used to cool the Dominion Mt Storm power generating station, so the water returns to the lake much warmer.
During cold weather, this warmer water extends the growing cycle for all fish species, and accelerates their appetite. About 12 miles of shoreline provides cover for bass, catfish and bluegill, while striped bass, wipers and walleye tend to spend a lot of time offshore using ledges, points, humps and river channels as hangouts.
