Popular Fish Species Berlin Lake, OH
Walleye

Current Report: Fair
Outlook: Good
In the last 14 years over a half a million walleye have been stocked in Berlin Lake. According to studies by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, walleye here are growing at a slightly better rate than those in other lakes in the state. As the ice started melting, anglers are finding walleye in the shallows, especially rocky areas. They will spawn in Spring, then move to flats, shoals and ledges off shore. Throughout Summer, early in the morning and from dusk to long after dark are good times to catch walleye, as they move shallow to feed. Spring and Fall are the best season for catching walleye. They primarily feed on gizzard shad and other small fish, close to the bottom. Blade baits, jigs, swimbaits and spoons are popular lure choices. Local anglers have reported catching walleye using spoons, deep-diving crankbaits, and worm harness spinners while trolling in recent years.
Black Crappie - White Crappie

Current Report: Fair To Good
Outlook: Good
Crappie fishing at Berlin Lake has been improving slightly over the last few years. However, a lack of cover, and water level fluctuations, hinder steady expansion of the species. Spring is the premiere time to be on the water as crappie move into shallow coves to spawn. Rocky areas are a good place to cast small crappie jigs or live minnows. Light tackle with 4 lb to 8 lb line is ideal. Locals report success using fish finders to locate schools of crappie, which tend to stack vertically.
Largemouth Bass

Current Report: Fair
Outlook: Good
There is not much cover for bass, or baitfish, in Berlin Lake. So populations of both do not grow at the same rate as lakes with good cover. Bass here are feeding on gizzard shad, crawfish and small sunfish. Currently, anglers locating schools of bait in open water, or fishing around rocky areas where crawfish hang out, are catching bass. Various lures are working well for largemouth bass here. Vibrating jigs, jerkbaits, crankbaits, jigs and stick worms are all catching bass.
