Smallmouth Bass Fishing
Chautauqua Lake continues to sustain a robust smallmouth bass population. Many locals enjoy smallmouth fishing, as smallies are tough fighters and very exciting to catch. Smallmouth bass fishing is good virtually anytime they are shallow. Use shallow spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, crankbaits, tube baits and jerkbaits around rip rap. Around grass, use worms, jigs, topwater and spinnerbaits. In winter, spend your time on deeper structure with small worms, jigs and spoons. Largemouth bass also reside here, and are caught in even higher numbers than smallmouth. Rock piles and points are prime areas for smallmouth as these areas are also home to crawfish. When the lake freezes over, consider ice fishing for smallies.
Walleye Fishing
Thanks to a significant baitfish population, and presence of numerous small sunfish in the lake, walleye are thriving in the fertile waters of Chautauqua Lake this year. May and June tend to be the best time for weekend anglers to catch them. During this time they tend to move shallower, closer to shore and begin spawning. Rock and gravel are preferred areas for the spawn. Other times of the year they are more likely to roam around in deeper water. As always, stay around schools of baitfish. They are eager to feed throughout the lake, but tend to concentrate around structure on points, flats and ledges off the river channels. Walleye have excellent, low-light vision which helps them find food in deep or murky water. Make an effort to be on the water during low light conditions. A proven method for catching walleye here is trolling with spinners tipped with live bait, or trolling with long-billed, deep diving crankbaits. However casting live bait, jigs, worms and spoons also works well at times. When the lake freezes over in winter, ice fishing for walleye can be very productive. Use GPS to locate spots you normally fish during other times of the year.
Muskie Fishing
Fishing for muskellunge in Chautauqua Lake could provide a trophy fish on any given cast. Giant musky roam these waters and are aggressive eaters. Muskie fishing can bring some exciting moments to your fishing day, as big muskies are spectacular, and strong fighters. Use a strong rod in medium- to medium-heavy action, with heavy line - 20# or heavier. Because of their sharp teeth, steel leaders are highly recommended. Muskie have a big mouth so use big baits, same baits you would use for bass but in larger sizes. Topwater, spinnerbaits, crankbaits and jerkbaits all work well for hungry muskie. The best time of year to chase these big fish is Spring, and then again in Fall as the water temperature starts cooling. When the lake freezes over in winter, ice fishing for musky can be very exhilarating. Use GPS to locate spots you normally find muskie during summer.

Fish species to fish for...
Guide to fishing for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, black crappie, walleye, bluegill, pumpkinseed sunfish, white perch, yellow perch and muskie at Chautauqua Lake in New York.
One of the top bass-fishing lakes in NY, Chautauqua Lake is a 13,000-acre lake in the southwest part of the state, at Chautauqua. There are two basins with over 40 miles of shoreline wrapping this fertile fishery, with plenty of weeds and aquatic vegetation near shore at both ends of the lake.
One of the most sought-after fish species in Chautauqua Lake is the muskellunge, also known as the muskie. In addition to muskellunge, Chautauqua Lake is known for its populations of walleye, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch, and panfish species such as bluegill and crappie.
The lake supports healthy populations of bass, crappie, walleye, sunfish, perch and muskie, and is known for big muskie and quality largemouth and smallmouth bass. Spring and fall are ideal times to fish the shorelines and shallow areas. In summer as the lake warms, many of the fish will move to deeper water. In winter, when the ice is safe, Chautauqua is an excellent ice fishing lake. Walleye, perch and crappie are the popular species through the ice. More than a half dozen boat launch ramps are scattered around the lake, and multiple marinas provide a host of products and services for the boating and fishing visitors. Much of the shoreline is lined with private property, many with boat docks. Anglers wishing to fish from the bank can find access at many areas around the lake, including near boat ramps, parks and camping areas.
