Popular Fish Species Cherry Creek Reservoir, CO
Walleye

Current Report: Good
Outlook: Good
Walleye like to slow cruise around flats and structure, especially rocky areas, close to deep water. They primarily feed close to the bottom. Troll using a bottom bounce, with a worm harness, and nightcrawlers. The south portion of the lake, from the dam to the People's Pier area, is a good place to start. Once you locate a school, a drop-shot rig with minnow-shaped plastics or nightcrawlers is a good way to work the school. This also works well while ice fishing in winter. Locals report spoons, deep-diving crankbaits, and jerkbaits are also catching walleye while trolling.
Black Crappie

Current Report: Fair To Good
Outlook: Good
Crappie fishing has been decent in Cherry Creek Reservoir last year, and should remain so this year. Spring is the premiere time to be on the water as crappie move into shallow coves to spawn. In winter, ice fishing has been good for crappie too. Rocky areas are a good place to cast small crappie jigs or live minnows. Light tackle with 4 lb to 8 lb line is ideal. Locals report good success using fish finders to locate schools of crappie, which tend to stack vertically around cover.
Rainbow Trout

Current Report: Good
Outlook: Good To Very Good
Colorado Parks and Wildlife reports stocking rainbow trout in Cherry Creek Reservoir, as an on-going fisheries management program to enhance angler experience. The diet of a rainbow trout consists of insects, small fishes and crustaceans. Use flies or small lures, imitating their natural food, to tempt them into biting. Small spinners, miniature crankbaits and swimbaits are catching rainbows, as are nightcrawlers, salmon eggs and prepared baits. Ice fishing can be productive in winter, as well.
