Largemouth Bass

Current Report: Good To Very Good
Outlook: Very Good

Because this lake gets very little fishing pressure, bass here can be caught on virtually any lure you throw. And, the quality of the fish is an extra bonus. Bass over 4 pounds are not uncommon, and lots of fish in the 3-pound class are being caught. The current water temperature is in the high 60's, which is why the bass are up shallow to feed and spawn. Most topwater baits are working including frogs, poppers, walking baits and buzzbaits. Crankbaits, worms and jerkbaits are also catching nice fish.

Black Crappie - White Crappie

Outlook: Good

Crappie fishing has been up and down here for a number of years now. Both black and white crappie are being caught, many of which have already spawned. There still a few stragglers spawning, but most crappie have moved deeper and are being caught in around 10' to 15'. Docks, brush, wood and vegetation are good places to cast small crappie jigs or live minnows. Light tackle with 4 lb to 8 lb line is ideal.

Channel Catfish

Outlook: Good

Channel cats will be spawning in a month or so, once the water rises into the high 70's. There are some channel catfish here exceeding 10 pounds, and very few anglers fish for them. Fishing for channel catfish is often productive around any kind of structure. Fishing late in the day until midnight often produces the best fishing activity as this is prime feeding time for channel cats. Submerged road beds, creek channels and rocky points are all good places to begin. Use a slip sinker or Carolina rig setup, baited with nightcrawlers, cut bait or prepared bait.

Lake Benson is a 650-acre lake with about 10 miles of shoreline. No private watercraft are allowed on the lake, however there are rental boats with electric motors available at the lake. Nice populations of bass, crappie, bream and catfish are available for fishing enthusiasts.
