Hyco Lake Popular Fish - Largemouth Bass

Largemouth Bass Fishing

Currently, largemouth bass are thriving in Hyco Lake due to excellent fisheries management and plenty of cover for both baitfish and bass. Fishing for largemouth bass is good virtually any time they are shallow - in spring, mornings in summer, and during warm Fall afternoons. Use shallow crankbaits around rip rap. Around grass use worms, jigs, topwater and spinnerbaits. In deeper water, big worms, jigs and spoons are three good weapons. In winter, spend your time on deeper structure. Other bass to be caught here include smallmouth bass and spotted bass.

Crappie Fishing

Both black crappie and white crappie reside in Hyco Lake, and crappie are a very popular species this year. Crappie fishing is on the rise and they can be found in sizeable schools. Crappie always like cover and structure, so locate brush and vegetation. Using a fish finder can help locate schools of crappie, which tend to stack vertically around cover. In spring and fall focus on the 8 to 12 foot range. As the crappie move deep in summer and winter, follow points out deep, as well as find ledges near channels in deeper water. White crappie, in smaller numbers, also make this lake their home.

Hybrid striped bass, also known as Bodie Bass, were stocked into Hyco Lake in 2019. They are beginning to flourish and some nice catches are being reported. They are becoming a favorite of many locals and fishing guides, as they are plentiful and grow to bragging size. Fishing for hybrid stripers is a matter of locating schools of bait, and schools of hybrid striped bass is likely to be in the area. Fish finders improve your odds of locating both bait and wipers. Live bait is very very effective here, and these chubby fish can be caught year round.

Year-round warm water, heated by the generating station, makes Hyco Lake a fish factory where bass and other species grow all year long. This 3,750-acre lake in the north-central part of the state, is primarily a bass and crappie fishery. There are however catfish and several species of sunfish, plus white bass to chase. This is the lake to fish when neighboring lakes turn cold for winter. Check out fishing reports for popular species at this lake. The lake not only has nice quantities of bass, but quality as well...fish over 5 pounds are common and an occasional lunker exceeding 8 pounds. The marina has boats and kayaks for rent and there are places to camp around the lake. Some of the shoreline is accessible for fishing from shore.
