AA-Bass Fishing - Guide To Fishing During Rain
By Rick Seaman and Dan Westfall

Any time it rains, there are several positive things that happen to improve fishing. The rain itself delivers highly-oxygenated water into the lake. The rain knocks flying insects into the water which attracts small fish. The clouds associated with rain can also improve the fishing. The drops of rain break up the surface and give the bass a more secure feeling during rain. After hard rains, the flow of washes, creeks and rivers into the lake delivers food and nutrients into the lake.
3 Most Important Factors About Fishing During Rain
- Cools or warms the surface of the water, adding oxygen.
- In-flowing water dirties up the back of creeks and washes causing the bass to actively feed.
- Breaks up the surface view of the bass making them less wary to roam and attack food.
3 Most Effective Fishing Methods & Lures
- Buzzbaits and noisy top water baits in shallow water.
- Spinnerbaits and crankbaits.
- Flukes and rip baits.
Short-Duration Rain.

Any time you can fish in the rain, you have an advantage. However, if there is lightning associated with the storm, get away from the lake and seek shelter. When you are able to fish during rain, not only will the fishing improve but so will your chances to catch bigger bass. The clouds and raindrops breaking up the surface on the water make big bass feel safer roaming about away from their safe haven of cover.
Shallow fishing. When it rains for short durations, the fishing should be good during and for a short time following the rain. If it stays cloudy after it stops raining, the better fishing could last for a much longer time. Surface lures are a good choice when it rains. As it is raining use noisy baits like buzzbaits, prop baits, and popper baits worked fast to create commotion and attract attention. Once the rain quits, slower, quieter presentations may be a better choice.
If the rain is excessive, it can also have a negative impact on shallow fishing. Too much rain can cause the lake to become muddy and interfere with vision for the bass. Often this drives the bass deeper or tighter into cover where they become inactive, waiting for the water to clear up. Slow presentations deep into cover may be the only way to elicit strikes during these conditions.
Fishing Deeper Structure.
Rain may have little or no impact on deeper fish unless the weather associated with the rain causes water conditions and temperatures to change dramatically. The clouds associated with the rain may reduce light levels in deep water causing you to work baits slower during the cloudy conditions.
Extended Periods Of Rain.
Any time it rains for extended periods of time or rains very hard for any length of time, the build up of water in feeder washes and creeks creates additional flow into the lake. This flow brings food and nutrition into the lake which attracts bait and all species of fish to congregate near these inflows. If the increase is dramatic, it is likely to muddy up the water and negatively impact fishing. Spinnerbaits with big Colorado blades, worked slowly, are a good choice in muddy water following a rain storm.
